Question by Eric: How time consuming will a restaurant business be for an 18 year old?
I’m leaving for New Haven to attend Yale this fall.

I’m very interested in establishing my own restaurant business around the area.If I could find someone, I’d prefer to have a partner since I reckon it would be a bit too time-consuming for a college freshman to handle.

Any ideas on how much time and effort I should look forward to give the business?

There are many aspects of opening a business that are often overlooked.

1. Initial investment, maintenance, monthly bills etc…
2. Marketing efforts including web development
3. Managing Employees payroll
4. Bookkeeping

If you plan to hire professionals for most of these services then it will not be too time consuming, probably 10 hours or so a week to ensure everything running smooth.

If you plan to manage payroll, marketing, budgets, employees etc you are looking at 40-80 hours a week.

I have a business meeting with CEO of another company which I can not attend for some business reason.

That’s a rough one. Cancelling twice is not cool and sends the message that you’ve twice had something more important than the CEO.

I would just be honest and apologetic. Don’t say cancel. Use reschedule. “I sincerely apologize but, I have to reschedule our meeting again. I promise that I am keenly interested in working with you but (Insert catastrophic event that is making you cancel/reschedule – again).”
