Question by N B: How difficult would a business degree program be for a creative, artistic person?
I am currently an English major who likes writing, but now I’m thinking about making the switch to Business. I do have some interest in business, though not as much as English. But I know that the business degree will provide more job opportunities. And I can still take part in my creative endevours on the side.
But I’m wondering whether or not creative types struggle and have trouble in the business degree program

Well, this kind of choice is a really personal thing. If you are truly creative, different and individualistic you will probably struggle with a business program. You’ll probably feel bored. Why not keep up with English and follow your heart. You can always take a few business classes on the side just to try them out or pursue this as a minor.
One you graduate people don’t seem to care about the exact degree in business–they are interested in your reliability and ability to work with others.

‘Strategic Management Works’ (now also operating as ‘One Life’) is an Australian company that
purports to be in the business of financial consultancy. From my perspective, they are more of a sinister new-age cult, preying on the unwary. The head guru is Mr Roy McDonald – a man with a big mouth, a polished appearance, and a heart for the dollar.
How did I ever get involved with these people? Well, I had been struggling for some months
since my dear father’s death with the question of ‘what do I do with my inheritance?’ ‘Give it
away’ was my initial impulse, though most of my friends told me that this was a stupid thing
to do (even though they were mainly church people, who admitted freely that this was what
Jesus would have done). ‘Put a deposit on a house’ was what most people suggested, even though the church currently provides us with somewhere to live, so I couldn’t really see the point.
Then a friend told me about ‘Strategic Management Works’, and told me that these guys really
knew about how money worked, and suggested that they might help me to make an informed
decision on the matter. So I signed up for a residential study camp that went for five days –
determined to reach a decision within those five days so that I could get on with my life and
ministry when I got back. Looking back, I really had no idea what I was signing myself up for!
When I shared about the experience in church, people said to me ‘how could you, of all people,
fall for something like that?’ It’s a good question, and a good reminder to me that I’m no
more wise or invulnerable than anybody else in this world.
Since sharing my story on this web site, I’ve had numerous people call me and email me,
sharing their own stories of woe. I’ve published some of these other stories here too. The
most forthright and disturbing of these stories comes from a lady by the name of Dr Lyn

Question by bayushi_d: What is a good dissertation topic for business?
I am currently working towards my doctorate in business administration, with a anticipated graduation date of 2011. I do not have any good ideas for topics and would like any suggestions of what would make a good topic. My main focus is accounting, but any business related topic is good.

Good question! I’m a bit of a business book junky so this topic fascinates me. I’m particularly interested in how certain actions/decisions affect the bottom line – especially things that are out of the box. I’d suggest looking at how going green can have a positive effect on a company’s bottom line. It’s timely, edgy, and interesting when you look at the recent studies that are coming out of universities and industry organizations.
You can get more specific by focusing on a particular green methodology. For example, I recently read some very interesting NASA research about how having living plants in an office building can result in a 325% ROI due to improved productivity, reduced absenteeism (through reduced sick building sickness), higher employee morale, and several other factors.
Most people (wrongly) that this is new territory and any information would be speculative. Actually, NASA has been studying it for nearly 20 years and numerous universities and industry organizations have published their findings from research and case studies. I have a file full of these studies because I’ve used it to create marketing materials for a company that offers related services. In a “green city” such as the one where I live, there are numerous consulting firms that are using the same research to help their corporate clients go green while taking advantage of financial, environmental, and tax benefits.
